Fighting the archaic world she came from, Lizzy was running away from a pre-determined destiny set-up by her parents. On the run when she met a man to whom she was attracted, she did not know whether to give in to the temptation or return to her previous life and behave as was expected out of her. After all he did seem like 'a dream come true'.

Andy was a maverick at heart. He loved his family immensely, but their love suffocated him and he always looked for reasons to be away from them. No ties, no commitments - that's the way he liked his life, his relationships. Until he met Lizzy. She made him see dreams he never thought he would. She made his life finally resemble 'a dream come true'.

But will Lizzy and Andy follow their hearts' true desire? Or will they acquiesce to what their family decrees their destiny to be? Will they trust each other enough to share their secrets? Will they achieve in life what most just dream of - a life which is 'a dream come true'.

Storyline

Lizzy saw him for the first time in a bar on the other side – one of the bartenders. He exuded raw male sexuality. Too attracted to him. But she never acted on her impulses. She was not raised that way. She was rather shy. In fact she rarely frequented bars or went clubbing. And even though for a moment she imagined what it would be like to throw caution to the wind, she decided to turn her face away. But not before he looked straight at her. He was as attracted to her and he recognized that she was attracted to him as well. Once he looked at her, she could not withdraw her eyes from him. She was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. She went up to his side of the bar and ordered a drink. He smiled a little deviously and made her drink. Distracted by another bartender. She gulped down her drink. He turned to see. Raised an eyebrow at her. She shrugged. He placed another in front of her. She drank this one too in one gulp. She was never a heavy drinker. A glass of wine generally would what she had. These two drinks loosened up her senses and made her do what she wouldn’t have found the courage to do in case she was not drunk. She flirted with him throughout the night. He was amused, but he flirted right back. When number of patrons started to dwindle he took her out of there and upstairs to his pad. They had a steamy night of passion. Next morning she left.
Papers declared her to be the fiancé of the heir of Sanders empire – Andrew Sanders. That made her grumpy. A bell rang. She went to open the door. No servants as she was on holiday and had taken up this bungalow by herself. He was standing out. Angry. She tried to say something. He shoved the paper in her face. Why did you lie to me?
I did not. If nothing else, I was truthful to you.

Tired. Defeated. It bothered him. She went inside and he followed. It was an arranged marriage. She had to go through it. She had not met her so-called ‘fiancé’ yet. Last evening, she came to know about her marriage. She felt that last night was her last chance to live her own life. She didn’t regret it but was sorry if she hurt him. He was quiet. Then he gave in. She was here for few more days before she had to go back to her real life and do what the family wanted. He offered a respite. They had a steamy affair.

At the end she is in love with him and heartbroken at the same time coz she cannot be with him. But she cannot go ahead with her marriage too. She goes to break it off. Finds he is Andrew. Angry. He pacifies. All well.

Abstract

Sarah was a single mother whose life revolved around her five year old son – James. She did not need a man in her life and was happy with the way it was shaping. And even if she would permit a man in her life, he had to prove to be worthy of being a good father to James along with a good life partner to her. But when fate throws her together with a complete polar opposite of her, will she be able to resist these irresistible forces?

Harry does not have a serious bone in his body. Girls have always been a matter of pursuit for him. But a chance encounter and a night of passion with a no-nonsensical female, leads him to believe in the saying ‘opposites attract’. But will he be able to convince her as well?

Will Sarah be able to resist Harry’s advances? Will Harry be able to take on the role of a father in James’ life if he wants to be a part of Sarah’s? Is their attraction stronger than the seeming differences between them? Will the two of them avoid or succumb to these ‘irresistible forces’?

Storyline

When Bruce Shepherd walked out of her life, Sarah became a single mother by choice of– James, around whom her life revolved. Five years down, between her job as the no-nonsense editor-in-chief of Élan and her sweet boy, she had little time to spare for any other thing. While Harry as the youngest son of the Sanders family was a carefree, laid-back individual taking life as it came each day. They were polar opposites in personality but brought together by fate, when they met at the wedding of Sarah’s colleague, Betty and Rick, Harry’s brother where they were the matron-of-honor and best man respectively. There was instant attraction but Sarah was not one who would let a night of passion rule her decisions in life, especially since those decisions involved her son. Harry wanted to bring out the passion he had seen in Sarah that night and so was relentless in his persuasion. They fight the attraction, but finally succumb to it and all is well.

The type of girl who would:-
·         Die for you if I loved you.
·         Dress up well to impress you.
·         Do everything for you without thinking.
·         Put you before me.
·         Play along with your stupidity just to please you.
·         Shower you with love and expect nothing in return.
·         Take your bullshit when you are wrong.
·         Tell you what you want to hear instead of what you should hear.
·         Hurt myself just to see you smile.
·         Lose weight for you.
·         Kill my happiness just to be with you.
Love is when the other person makes you happy even after all the disagreements in the world.
Love is not stupid, corny and unreasonable nor am I.
Take me for who I am or turn around and walk away

I will not lose weight or dress up well to impress you. I will not kill my happiness just to be with you. I will not do everything for you without thinking, or put you before me. I will not play along with your stupidity just to please you. I will not tell you what you want to hear instead of what you should hear. I cannot shower you with love and expect nothing in return or take your bullshit when you are wrong. I cannot hurt myself just to see you smile. No I am not the type of girl who would die for you if I loved you.

Neither do I expect you to be. Love is not stupid, corny and unreasonable nor am I. Love is when the other person makes you happy even after all the disagreements in the world. And you make me happy, even if we are polar opposites of each other.

I love you as you are. I love your curves, your quirky dressing style, your bossiness, your know-it-all attitude or your fighting spirit. And I know you love me enough to die for me if the occasion demands, said he with a cheekiness.

I am ready to accept you for who and what you are. In turn I ask you to take me for who I am or turn around and walk away.

So what do you say, babe? Do we get a chance?

HM: Chapter 4 - Becoming A Lady

Morning always came early for Mark. However, the journey across the sea was just over and he was tired. Mark was unaware of the smile playing on his lips as he dreamed of a blonde haired green-eyed marchioness. But as he woke up, he felt fully rested and as if he was finally home – the place that had eluded him since the time he lost his parents.

He woke up to the sound of the laughter of kids and his thoughts went towards having his own some day. He had always loved kids, especially his nephew and niece – Alex and Nina. As he thought of them he got up, freshened himself, got dressed and finally set off to find the little rascals with a smile tugging his face.

He followed the sound of their laughter and found them playing a game of Tag with Bella… er… Cassie. It was going to be a tough time trying to remember that the beautiful girl in front of him was different from the scourge of his early youth. And then she turned and greeted him with a radiant smile of her own. Maybe it was not going to be as tough to think of her as only Cassie, thought Mark.

Mark returned her smile with a grin and went on to join the party of three.

“Well, well. It seems nobody misses me anymore over here.” exclaimed Mark to the kids.

“Uncle Mark! Uncle Mark!” shouted both the kids in unison as they turned and saw Mark; they ran into his outspread arms. Mark picked each kid in one arm and whirled them around, the size of all their 6 years being light for Mark’s built and height of six feet three inches. Cassie watched the trio as they whirled and twirled around – the innocent laughter of the kids mingling with the booming one of Mark.  The kids seemed to truly love their ‘Uncle Mark’, and he in turn seemed to genuinely care for them. Cassie smiled along with them at their antics.

Ever since she had come to stay with the Duke of Wellingshire, the kids had been in her charge. They were both really good kids, with a ready smile and eager manners and Cassie had come to love them a great deal.  When she had first come, it had been merely six months since the accident that killed their parents and aunt, Bella – the one whom she so much resembled in face. The kids had seemed low and withdrawn in the beginning and it had taken a great deal of effort from her to bring out their natural exuberance. She thought back to the day she had first come to the estate of the Duke of Wellingshire.

Leaney Household, Carlton, 1888

Cassie, or rather Cassandra Livington had spent ten years from a child to a young lady of seventeen at the Convent of Mary. She got the position of a governess for the Leaney Household in Carlton, upon recommendation from her favorite teacher Sister Greta. Sister Greta had always liked Cassie and had profusely recommended her to be the young governess of the two motherless children of the Baron of Leaney. The Baron was a dear old man of forty five odd years with a portly figure. His wife had recently died because of the fever, before Cassie came to live with his family. He had two sons who were thirteen and ten at that time.

Cassie quickly assimilated herself to the household and became a surrogate mother and teacher for the two children. Both were well-behaved kids, although a bit bereft at the death of their mother. Within weeks being with Cassie had become an integral part of the family and brought joy and peace to the Leany household. Lord Smith, the Baron of Leaney, also let go of his grief slowly. Their days were regular filled with peace and quiet of the town of Carlton and Cassie had become a part of the family. To the kids, she was like an elder sister and to the Baron like the daughter he had never had.

And then, he had met Elizabeth Brown, the new spinster teacher at the village school and fell in love with her. Elizabeth was a rather tall lady with average features and pleasant manners. After a whirlwind courtship, he asked for Elizabeth’s hand in marriage and she agreed. Although Cassie was fond of the entire Leaney household, including the newest member – Elizabeth, she thought it was time to move on. Elizabeth was a lovely lady who had very effectively filled the void left after the death of the Baron’s first wife.

After handing over the reins of the Leaney household within a year to Elizabeth, Cassie said her good-byes. Elizabeth Leaney had an aunt in the town of Wellingshire who was working as a governess in the household of the Duke of Wellingshire. This aunt was due retirement after working for the Duke for the past thirty years. Also she wanted to come and visit Elizabeth in her new household and see for herself the happiness of her only niece. But Aunt Martha was undecided over the fact that the Duke’s grandchildren had recently become orphans and there was no one to look after them. Aunt Martha had looked after the Duke’s children, Anthony and Isabella as well. But now she was getting old and it was becoming difficult for her to take care of two energetic children on her own. Also, being in the Wellingshire estate reminded her of Anthony and Isabella at each turn and it brought tears to her eyes so very often.

Elizabeth did not want Cassie to go from Carlton, as now they had become very good friends. But since she was so insisting to leave, Elizabeth recommended Cassie to become the governess for the Duke’s grandchildren.

And this is how Cassie found herself on route to Wellingshire Estate to take up the position of the governess for the Duke’s grandchildren.

Wellingshire Estate, 1893

Cassie was aware that they had entered Wellingshire Estate, so informed by the driver of the carriage. She was looking outside the carriage window at the scenery passing by and admiring the estate. It seemed to be huge with fields on both sides of the roads, happy peasants working on the land and enjoying the summer sun.

Cassie was thinking back to the Leaney household and how her new duties would differ from the ones she left behind. The kids she was going to look after now were twins aged six. This was to be her second job and she had only had experience with Tom and John; aged at ten and thirteen respectively. She had only had experience with a baron of a small town and now she was going to work in a Dukedom – under a Duke who was next to Royalty. The prospect scared her a bit.

Suddenly the gates of the Wellingshire Manor opened up and they started driving up the path leading to the Manor. It was a huge manor, imposing in its appearance with big strong pillars supporting it. The gardens in the front were nicely kept and you could make out a small pond in the distance with a fountain in the centre. Once the driveway ended and the carriage reached the doorstep, one of the estate footmen came running up to open the gate to the carriage.

Cassie got down on her own and moved towards the big doors of the Manor. As she was deciding to knock on the door, it open inwardly on its own and there stood a stoic butler on the other side of the door.

Cassie hesitated as she said, “I… I have come to meet the Duke.”

The butler looked down at her at this and suddenly his stoic face blanched. He uttered, “Bella!”

Looking at his ash-stricken face, Cassie thought that he might faint or something and asked him, “Are you feeling alright? You seem to be sick.”

“Bella! Ma petite!” said the butler again. “Let me call His Grace. He will be so happy to see you.” With that the butler ran off in the other direction leaving Cassie to herself at the door.

After waiting a while, Cassie entered the house and looked around. The manor was as beautiful inside as from the outside.

HM: Chapter 3 - A Daughter Found

Towards Wellingshire Townhouse, Upper Brook Street, 1893

Mark was sure Bella detested him as much as he detested her or rather he detested her till last year. Now he was not so sure. Now he wanted to hold her in his arms, he wanted to comfort her, he didn’t know for what. She was looking out of the window with a determined expression, as if she could take on the world. He wanted to take on the world for her. What was happening to him! Earlier also he used to get affected by her beauty, but it was lust mostly. Now he felt protective of her. He wanted to tackle all her demons. These emotions were new to him.

Cassie was thinking of what she would do in her future. Suddenly she thought of how lonely she was. The thought made her slump her shoulders with a sigh.

“A penny for your thoughts, Marchioness.” Mark interrupted her reverie when he saw her become despondent.

Startled, Cassie turned toward him. He had noticed her sigh, she knew. “Nothing, my lord. I am just tired.” she said and looked down again.

Mark looked at her fallen face and it brought out those protective urges in him again. Not knowing how to handle his new emotions, he looked away. He noticed Mrs. Weatherland was asleep; her mouth open. He felt a fly could go inside it, lay eggs and come out and she wouldn’t realize. The thought made him chuckle.

“I didn’t know that my being tired would amuse you so much.” said Cassie as she heard him laugh. The sound somehow pleased her, as if lifted a burden off her shoulders.

Mark looked at her. She was teasing him; not the way she used to do earlier, but in a rather friendly manner. He liked her teasing him thus.

“No”, he laughed. “I was contemplating about how many flies can enter Mrs. W’s mouth while she happily sleeps.” He gave her a mischievous grin.

Cassie looked at Mrs. Weatherland, saw her open mouth and burst out laughing.

“That is so mean of you to tease a dear old lady thus!” she said still laughing.

“I know it is mean. But I couldn’t help it.” he shrugged.

“Poor Mrs. Weatherland. And here she thinks that you are irreproachable.” she teased.

“I can’t help that either.” he faked a sigh.

“You are incorrigible!” she burst out laughing yet again.

He liked the sound of it. It sounded so genuine unlike the other times. He liked her company as well. He liked it for the first time since he had known her. He didn’t want this ride to end. But alas! They reached home and Mrs. Weatherland woke up with a start.

“Oh! That was a short ride! Got over in a wink, I must say!” exclaimed Mrs. Weatherland.

“Two winks, must say!” commented Mark as he looked at Cassie and winked. Cassie again started laughing and Mrs. Weatherland looked on with a puzzled expression.

They got down from the carriage. Mrs. Weatherland said that she was very tired and wished them good night; after which she went up to her room. The light in the library was still on indicating that His Grace was still awake.

Both Mark and Cassie walked towards the library in companionable silence. Cassie didn’t know how to approach the topic of Bella. Mark was content to walk beside Bella. For the first time he thought, it wouldn’t be so bad to make her his marchioness… ‘His Marchioness!’ He like the words and smiled to himself.

Cassie wanted to ask him the cause of his smile, but suddenly the library doors opened and His Grace came out.

“Cassie, my child, you are back!” cried the duke.

                Cassie? Who is Cassie?, thought Mark.

Suddenly the duke noticed the young gentleman with Cassie. “Mark, what a pleasant surprise! Come in, my boy.” said the duke, as Cassie looked at the shock etched on Mark’s features.

Mark inclined his head at the duke. “Your Grace. Who is Cassie?” asked Mark.

“Ah! This is Cassie, Mark. I am sorry; I didn’t realize you were unaware. Bella was never found; she died along with my son and his wife.” said the duke looking dejected. And then he raised his eyes filled with love towards Cassie and continued, “Cassie then came into our lives. It’s a long story…” With this, the duke told Mark how Cassie had come to live with them. Mark heard it with equanimity.

But there were a multitude of thoughts going in his head. Cassie looked exactly like Bella. How was this possible? But then he should know better. There were too many twins in his family... too many people who looked alike.  He had been so busy last year. He was out at sea, when he got the news of his sister and brother-in-law’s deaths. Bella was with them when the mishap occurred, but unfound as yet. The search for her was still on. It was too late for him to go to England; the funeral must have been over two months ago. News traveled slowly when he was at sea.

Besides he had to set sail again. And then he hadn’t received any news after that, but that could be because he was again at sea. He had believed that Bella would have been found, safe and sound. She had the nine lives of a cat; he always used to tease her.

But now she was no more and there was another in her place. He looked at Cassie. She was looking at him with sympathy. He felt odd. He looked at the duke as he was saying,

“And so, now she is my daughter. I am aware you never wanted to marry Bella. But Marcus insisted and we all gave in. But now your uncle cannot force you. Bella’s death has made you a free man,” said the Duke sadly and then added, “I miss my daughter, but I have found another in Cassie.” The duke looked lovingly at Cassie, who easily went into his arms.

“As I have found my family with you, Pa. I would like to go to sleep now if you don’t mind. Goodnight Pa!” she said giving a hug to the old man.

“Yes, yes my child. Good night!” replied the duke with a hug of his own.

She turned towards Mark and said, “Good night.”

“Good night mar… my lady.” Mark had stopped before he could call her marchioness again. Cassie felt oddly sad at the missing endearment. She went up with a heavy heart, she knew not why.

Mark sat in the chair in front of His Grace, thinking about Cassie. This is the reason she didn’t appear like the Bella I knew. She is not Bella. This thought brought a smile to his face.

HM: Chapter 2 - The Reality Of Bella

Cassie was irritated with this intriguing stranger – Mark’s insistence on addressing her as a marchioness when she had already corrected him and she was going to state the same to him. However, Mrs. Weatherland interrupted their heated exchange which she remembered from the past so many years. She reprimanded both the young people whom she loved dearly as her own kids.

“Oh come… come! Everyone knows that someday you will inherit the titles and estates from your uncle and you will be the next Marquess of Bellingham, Mark. And since you both will be married by then” and then she said half under her breath, “if you do not cut each other’s throats out by that time,” and continued on “Isabella will be the next Marchioness of Bellingham. Quit fighting over this now. It’s been six years since you both goad each over this. I go weary of your disgruntlements. You both are aware, there is no escaping this fate of yours. And I must say…”

But Cassie had lost track of what Mrs. Weatherland was saying. The daughter of the Duke of Wellingshire, Isabella was engaged. Isabella or Bella, as most people called her, was engaged to this stranger, no to Mark. His name was Mark and he was the future Marquess of Bellingham. He was also uncle to Alex and Nina, the two lovely darlings whom she now loved as if they were her own. He was the brother of the late daughter-in-law of the Duke, Maria. He was the brother-in-law of the late son of the Duke, Anthony. And he was Bella’s fiancé…and in turn her fiancé! How would she ever get out of this!

He didn’t seem the kind of person who would let her go easily. But then he also didn’t seem keen on marrying her. Maybe, there was still some hope. This brightened her a bit. Yes, she would discuss this with the Duke and … Mark. Surely, there was a way out of all this.

Mark saw the play of emotions on Bella’s face. She went from despair to hope to delight. She was a sight to behold when she was delighted. Heck! She was a sight anytime. His thoughts made him wonder, whether he truly wanted to be free of their imposed relationship or not. Earlier he was so sure, he wanted nothing to do with her. Now, he wasn’t sure anymore. Something had changed in her since the last time he saw her, when his sister and her brother were alive. It was a change for the better. And it was making the task of resisting her difficult.

With an effort, he wasn’t aware he would be faced with; he drew his attention to the situation at hand. Mrs. Weatherland was asking him if he was coming to the Duke’s Townhouse. He had planned on using his uncle’s Townhouse. But he wanted to explore this new side of Bella.

“Of course Mrs. W. I could never refuse you.” he said amiably which rather pleased Mrs. Weatherland.

Mark called for the footman and the duke’s coach arrived and all three of them left in it, while Mark’s own coachman followed behind.

Mark studied the beautiful woman sitting in front of him in the coach. He had despised her all his adult life, not for her beauty, but for her frivolity, her vanity, the way her beauty affected him. But when his uncle gave the directive that he would donate all his monies to charity unless he married the Duke of Wellingshire’s only daughter, he had relented. Looking at her now, it took him back when it all started.

Lincolnshire, the Americas, 1864

Michael Windworth and Alicia Windworth were a missionary couple working in the colonies. Michael was the younger son of the Marquess of Bellingham, younger by a mere seven minutes. However, he never grudged his brother – Marcus’ fortune as the heir to a title. He was happy being the “spare” and even happier to carry out his life as a vicar in the small town of Burton, bordering Bellingham Estate. However, fates had decided something else for him and one fine day he decided to leave for the Americas to work as a missionary over there along with his newlywed wife, Alicia.

Alicia was more than happy to accompany her husband and in time the lord blessed them with two sweet and beautiful children– Mark and Maria. Even though they were twins, they were as apart in looks as night and day. While Mark was dark, Maria was fair. Mark had black hair and midnight blue eyes, while Maria had strawberry blonde hair and cornflower blue eyes. As they grew up, Maria stopped growing after reaching a height of five feet, while Mark shot three inches over the six foot height of his father.

After living a happy life for more than two decades in the Americas, Michael and Alicia Windworth, died due to an epidemic they had tried to save the people from. After the death of their parents, Mark and Maria were left alone. At the same time, a letter arrived from England from their Uncle Marcus giving his condolences and asking them to come visit him in England. He seemed sincere in his feelings for his brother. Besides he was the only relative they had left in the world, so the siblings decided to go to England in search of their destiny.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bellingham Estate, 1886
Mark and Maria had come to England for the first time in the twenty one years of their life. They were also meeting their Uncle Marcus for the first time and were shocked to see the face of their father looking back at them. Marcus Windworth, the ninth Marquess of Bellingham looked exactly like his younger twin – Michael. But the passing away of his brother had added some fine lines to his features. He welcomed his niece and nephew in his home and his heart with open arms. Marcus had never married in life due to a love long lost and so now he poured all his love and pent up emotions on his new charges.
With his love and understanding, Maria soon bloomed to be a beautiful and happy young lady with all the charms that ladies at that age are wont to have. Mark however was quieter and took all calmly. But, he loved his sister dearly and was happy to see her bloom again into a cheerful lady. He thought he would soon have to fight off ardent suitors.
However, Marcus had other plans. He had a best friend in the Duke of Wellingshire – Robert Middleton. His grace came from an old and established family and was the tenth Duke of Wellingshire. He also had a large estate and a flourishing business looked after by his only son – Anthony. Anthony, the Marquess of Bringham, one of the lesser estates in the Dukedom, was a young man of pleasant features and pleasant manners. He was the quintessential blue eyed, blonde haired English gentleman with a twinkle in his eye, a smile on his face and a nice word for everyone he met.
Marcus loved Anthony like a son and now since coming to know Maria, thought of getting them married to each other. Maria was a fair maiden with her mother’s pretty features and her father’s disposition. She was kind and caring and exactly like the daughter he would have liked to have.
A chance meeting coupled with some others arranged by Marcus and Robert, and as fate would have it, Anthony and Maria fell in love with each other. One fine day Anthony proposed and Maria accepted.
Mark in the meantime was getting to know Isabella, the beautiful but headstrong daughter of the Duke. Isabella or Bella, as she was better known, was a beauty with honey blonde hair like her brother but green eyed like her late mother. At first, Mark was in awe of her beauty like the dozens of other suitors around her. Her laugh was like tinkling bells and her smile could light up a dull room.
But as Mark started to get to know her, he saw the stubborn streak in her coupled with the selfish attitude which showed when things didn’t go her way. This was not often as every one was ever ready to please her and have her shine that smile on them. But it was present and could not evade Mark’s perceptive eyes. As the nature overrode the beauty, Mark saw her for what she was and got out of his infatuation with her before he could fall further into it.
When Bella realized that her wiles would not work on Mark, she started to despise him. However, she did like Maria and loved Anthony in her own way. When the happy couple announced their engagement, everyone was genuinely happy for them including Mark who wanted nothing more than his sister’s happiness. Also, he had got to know Anthony as a strong and dependable character, who behind his easy smile was a person to be trusted always. Soon Anthony and Maria got married and within a year, Maria gave birth to twins – Alex and Nina.
In the short time that Mark had been in England he had quickly grasped the dealings of the estate and even seen to its progress. He found that he loved doing business and had a knack for it, rather than just being a peer of the realm like his uncle or a selfless missionary like his father.
But Marcus was not satisfied. After seeing his niece settled in her life, he now dreamt of seeing his nephew getting married as well to a girl of his choice. And the first name that he thought of was of course – his dear old friend, Robert’s lovely daughter – Bella. With this wonderful thought he approached Mark one day as he was going over the estate accounts.
“My boy, you are always engrossed in work. We have Estate Managers for that sort of work. You should learn to relax once in a while and spend some time on yourself”, said the Marquess to his nephew.
Mark looked up from his work and gave one of his rare smiles to his uncle, and said, “Uncle Marcus, I love going through the accounts myself and getting to know the nitty-gritty of the business. Besides you are the one who always says that I have to look after all the estates one day. I am just getting some practice.”
Marcus never understood why Mark needed to be so engrossed in the work. But yes, he was right. As the next Marquess of Bellingham, Mark would one day oversee all and well all this training would just help him to better understand the business of the estate once he took the reins in his hands.
“Very well my boy. It is up to you. After all it is your legacy to uphold. However, let me remind you again. Our forefathers have left ample for us and God has been really kind to us. Also, our Estate Managers are astute and so the holdings of Bellingham have always increased in dire situations as well”, said Marcus with a smile of his own.
“I know uncle, I just love doing this and I feel I have found the purpose of my life when I am working for the estate”, said Mark with a sigh.
“It pleases me to see that you love the estate so!” said Marucs with another smile. He was really proud of his nephew.
“Anyway, enough of all this, I wanted to talk to you about something” added Marcus.
“Sure, tell me Uncle?”
“You know, Maria is now well settled in her life. Anthony is a good person. They even have kids now to keep the house in an uproar. But I have been thinking of our house.”
“What about it, Uncle?”
“I want small kids to run about in Bellingham as well. I want you to get married.”
Mark burst out laughing, “Surely you are joking, Uncle. I am but twenty two. Too young to get hitched.” Mark started to turn his head towards his work again with a chuckle.
Marcus interrupted him. “No listen to me, my boy. I know you are young. But you can get betrothed?”
Mark quirked up a dark eyebrow, “To whom?” He had a feeling he was aware where this was leading to.
“Bella” said Marcus with a smile.
“BELLA!!! Are you serious Uncle?” shouted Mark.
“Of course I am. I even talked to Robert about it. And he is ecstatic about it as well. We couldn’t find a better suited pair”, beamed his uncle.
“You are both out of your minds!!!” roared Mark, “I am not interested in that... that SHREW!!!”
“Mark! Hold your tongue! Bella is the sweetest, loveliest young girl you will ever find.”
“Sweet my foot!” mumbled Mark and then said loudly, “Look Uncle, even if she was the sweetest, loveliest young girl on earth I am not interested in marrying her nor am I getting betrothed to her. Not now. Not ever.”
This angered Marcus, who had loved Bella like the daughter he never had, before Maria had turned up. Although now Maria was his daughter and he loved her the most, still Bella was dear to him as well.
“Mark! You will not insult Bella. I love her and I have given my word to her father. You will get betrothed to her. You both can get married when she is ready.”
“If you have given your word, then you go fulfill it. I don’t have to”, said Mark in anger.
“Yes you have to. Or I will unbequeath you!”
“You wouldn’t dare. You know how much I love the estate. Besides you cannot. I am your only living heir.”
“You are forcing me to. Besides I can. You may be my only living heir and I have to pass the title of Marquess down to you, but the properties and estate are not entailed. I can give them to whom so ever I like” stated Marcus with a gleam of triumph in his eyes. He knew he was not being fair to Mark, but it was for his own good. He would never do that to his nephew though. The Bellingham estate had always gone with the title and that is how it would remain to be so. But his nephew did not need to know that. Besides one day Mark would thank him for making such a good choice of wife for him. He thought that since he had made the right choice for Maria, he could not go wrong for Mark.
Mark on the other hand was mulling over his Uncle’s ultimatum. In the past year that he had known Bella, he found her rude, obnoxious, frivolous and selfish among other things. No doubt he found her pretty but he did not think lust was a good enough reason to base a marriage on. He wanted a marriage like the kind his parents shared or the kind his sister and brother-in-law shared. He highly doubted that he would find that kind of marriage with Bella.
Also, in this short span he had come to love the estate more than the colonies he had spent his life growing up. However, he could learn to live without the estate. Besides lately he had realized it was the thrill or the risk of venturing into a business and seeing it succeed that lured him more. His sound business decisions for the estate might work elsewhere as well. He just had to try his luck. Till then he would bide his time.
With this thought in mind he turned to his Uncle, “Very well, Uncle Marcus. I agree to get betrothed to Bella. But I have certain conditions.”
Marcus looked at him with a smile now and said, “Let me know.”
“One. Bella has to agree. Two. I am not getting married for another five years at least.”
Not one to quibble over trifles, Marcus said, “Agreed.”
Besides he knew that Bella would not refuse him and Robert would agree to wait for five years before getting married as Bella was too young now at seventeen.
When Marcus went up to Robert and Bella and mentioned this, Bella said,
“Engaged to Mark? What did he say?” she carefully controlled her expressions before Marcus as she did not want to spoil her image in front of him.
“He agreed. But he wants to wait five years before marriage.” Marcus replied.
“Hmm. Very well, if he says so. I agree as well.” said Bella demurely lowering her eyelashes.
Marcus beamed happily and hugged Bella quickly before hugging Robert tightly.
Bella on the other hand was thinking about Mark. Well, well, well. So finally I get a chance to get under his skin. Figuratively. She smirked. He was the only one who didn’t seem to fall at my feet at my one smile. The only one who seemed unaffected by my charms. Let’s see how he fares as my betrothed and if he is really as immune to me as he seems to be. Besides, I would love to be a Marchioness one day.
Robert looked at Bella who was smiling to herself as if contemplating the issue and he shivered. Whenever, Bella looked like that it usually meant trouble for others. Marcus was blind to a fault where Bella was concerned; but Robert did see the evil streak in his daughter at times. However, she was his daughter and he loved her. Still, he worried about Mark and wondered if Mark would have agreed without any sort of pressure from Marcus.
That evening Mark and Bella met at Wellingshire Estate when Mark had come to visit his sister.
“I see my betrothed has finally deigned to pay me a visit”, said Bella.
“I have come to visit my sister and her children. I have no desire to set my sight upon you.” gritted Mark.
With a bored look Bella responded, “Whatever you say. Let me see if you say the same once I become your Marchioness.” There was an evil gleam in her eyes, which raised Mark’s hackles.
“Oh? Already dreaming, Marchioness?” said Mark, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Of course, my lord”, snapped Bella right back.
“I am not a lord, Marchioness”, snapped Mark.
“We shall see… my lord”, said Bella with a smile and walked away from him.
This set a pattern in their communication even as their betrothal was announced and they were congratulated by one and all. That very year Mark returned to America at the age of twenty two. He had worked hard over there in trade, unheard of in his family. He never took a break; accept for a yearly visit to his sister’s family. But there he was again thrown together with Bella, which encouraged him to go back and work harder. Six years had passed since then and finally his hard work had paid off. Hard work and a stroke of luck last winter had made him richer than his uncle.
Last year when he had returned home, his uncle had insisted on his and Bella’s marriage. But he had escaped saying that there were still two months for the five years to be up that he had asked for. He had not returned back since, and he had dreaded to go back when he knew his uncle awaited his return and would wait no more for his marriage to his precious ‘Bella’. However, with the riches that he now had he could buy an estate of his own, larger than Bellingham and Wellingshire combined and live a life in luxury. He no longer needed to marry Bella to gain a fortune. He had made his own fortune. And this year he had returned to break their long standing engagement.
